Welcome to Arthur Westlake unusual, hand made furniture, table and kitchen design.

This is our site to promote unusual furniture or "Individual furniture for the discerning few." as we would say.

My name is Arthur Westlake and I have been working in the building trade for the best part of 35 years.

Our main business is general building and carpentry although we tend to specialise more in kitchen and restaurant design than anything these days.

We work to a tight schedule and try to ensure that the restaurant opens on time whether it is a new one or refurbishment.

The two things we strive for in our design is maximum covers for the space available and the best possible food presentation. We know from experience for instance that well displayed cakes can add hundreds of pounds to a months takings.

If needed we work at night after the restaurant closes, so it is  ready to open again in the morning.

I have included a couple of restaurant refurbishments on the site. Both of them for Goulds of Dorchester. The first of which "Cafe 11" was totally re-modelled in 10 days.

The second which is the Java Cafe at their garden centre in Weymouth was doubled in size in 33 days.

Prior to this we had fitted a new display and service area to the front of house of the former coffee shop. This was achieved in one night. The method was to take ready made units and dress them up to make them stand out as something different and give that individual look.

However the main point of the site is the furniture.

Just occasionally in our job we come across a really lovely piece of wood and when that happens the artist kicks in and I make a piece of furniture out of it.

I never know when such a piece will turn up or what it will be until it happens. The process can take months before I get the desired feel to the piece.
